Phil Woods has been writing poetry since 1967--his first poem was scratched on a brick with a bent rusty nail. Phil has worked in canneries, the Post Office, Denver Public Schools, colleges and prisons He has studied poetry with Ralph Salisbury, Robert Bly, Gary Snyder, Coleman Banks and Ann Waldman. He received his MFA from the University of Oregon in 1983. He had the most fun performing poetry with the Free Radical Railroad (a group of 3 poets, Phil, the late Mike Adams of Lafayette and
James Taylor III with guitarist Jim Shekels). To Understand is Phil's tenth book of poetry. Also, since 2006 Phil has been a writer and actor in the award winning Romero Theatre Troupe.
