Art Elser served for 20 years as a pilot in the U.S Air Force, flying as a forward air controller in Vietnam in 1967-1968, retiring in 1997. He worked 30 years as a technical writer for various computer, software, and communications firms. He has a PhD in English and was a professor of English at the USAF Academy. His chapbook, We Leave the Safety of the Sea, won the Colorado Authors' League award in 2014. Art has recently published A Death at Tollgate Creek: Songs of the Prairie.
Of the genesis of his early work, Elser says,
"Writing those poems saved my life, in a manner of speaking. I was able to work through some really deep emotional issues and leave behind most of the flashbacks, nightmares, daymares that plagued me for many years."
